Most people describe painful areas in their body as “tight.”
And the natural response is to stretch it.
Sometimes that helps — but often it only gives temporary relief. You feel better for a day or two, maybe a few hours, and then it’s back. Exactly where it was.
That’s not a failure of effort. It might just be the wrong approach — because a lot of the time, what you’re feeling isn’t actually tight.
It’s taut.
And there’s an important difference.
Tight and taut are not the same thing
“Tight” suggests something shortened — a muscle that’s contracted, bunched up, lacking length. The logical solution is to stretch it out.
But “taut” is something different. Taut means already under tension — pulled, stretched, with no more room to give. Like a guitar string that’s been wound too far, or a rubber band at the end of its range.
When something is taut and you try to stretch it more, you’re not solving the problem. You’re adding load to something that’s already overloaded.
This is why stretching the same spot over and over can feel temporarily good — you’re stimulating circulation, waking up nerve endings, interrupting the pain signal for a moment — but the relief doesn’t hold. Because you haven’t changed the underlying reason it’s pulling.
What fascia has to do with it
The reason an area can feel taut without being shortened comes down to how the body is actually organized — and fascia is a big part of that.
Fascia is a continuous web of connective tissue that runs through the entire body. It surrounds and connects every muscle, organ, nerve, and bone. It’s not a separate layer — it’s woven into everything, creating a single continuous system from your feet to the top of your skull.
One of the properties of fascia is that it transmits tension across distance. A restriction in one part of the body doesn’t stay neatly contained — it pulls through the fascial web and shows up somewhere else. Sometimes far away.
This is why the place that hurts is often not the source of the problem.
I sometimes call it the victim and the culprit. The area that’s sore, tight-feeling, or restricted — that’s often the victim. It’s caught in a pull coming from somewhere else in the body, a holding pattern that’s been building over time. The culprit — the actual origin of the strain — is usually somewhere upstream.
Why the pain keeps coming back
Fascia doesn’t respond well to force. Unlike muscle, which has a good blood supply and can bounce back relatively quickly, fascia is dense and less vascular. It changes slowly, and it requires sustained, gentle input — not aggressive stretching.
When you repeatedly stretch an area that’s taut, you may be creating a momentary release in the tissue, but the fascial system is still holding its pattern elsewhere. So the body returns to what it knows.
There’s also a proprioceptive piece to this. Fascia is densely innervated. Research on fascial tissue has shown it contains more sensory nerve endings than the muscles it surrounds — making it one of the body’s primary sensory organsIt’s constantly communicating with the nervous system about position, load, and tension. If there’s an underlying restriction that the nervous system is compensating for, stretching the symptomatic area doesn’t change that communication. The body keeps compensating.
This is one reason why real change tends to feel different from what people expect. It’s often quieter. Less forced. Something releases — not because you pushed hard enough, but because the system found a way to let go.
What actually changes things
When I’m working with someone, I’m not focused on the area that hurts first.
I’m looking for where the tension is coming from. What’s holding the pattern. And when we address that — when the fascial restriction that’s been doing the pulling begins to soften — the symptomatic area often changes on its own. Without directly touching it.
People notice this all the time: I worked on your hip, and suddenly your shoulder dropped. I spent time on your foot, and the tension in your neck released.
That’s not magic. That’s the system responding as a whole.
The shift from “tight” to “taut” is more than a vocabulary distinction — it’s a lens. It changes the question from how do I stretch this to what’s creating this pull? And that question leads somewhere more useful.
